Dr Joel Lewin is a general surgeon with subspecialty training in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.  His specific interests include surgical management of benign and malignant conditions of the gallbladder, liver and pancreas.  He also offers minimally invasive surgery for abdominal / groin hernias, spleen and adrenal conditions.

Dr Lewin completed a postgraduate medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2012 and obtained his fellowship in general surgery at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s hospital in 2020.  

He underwent a further three years of subspecialty post fellowship training through the Australian & Aotearoa New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic & Biliary Association (AANZHPBA) in high volume tertiary centres at Box Hill Hospital in Victoria, Mater Hospital in Brisbane, and the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, with a strong focus on robotic and laparoscopic HPB surgery. 

With a keen interest in clinical research focused on minimally invasive HPB surgery, Dr Lewin has presented and published internationally on techniques for complex liver surgery and other aspects of HPB surgery. He is a founding member of the Australian & Aotearoa New Zealand Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery (AANZMIPS) collaborative. He has a strong commitment to teaching medical students and junior doctors, holding a lecturer position for the University of Queensland School of Medicine. 

Dr Lewin treats patients at Greenslopes Private Hospital and Mater Private Hospital in Brisbane.  He has a public appointment at the Mater Hospital.
